Lancaster celebrates the honor of being the nation's capital for one day as the Continental Congress fled Philadelphia and took refuge here from the advancing British army on Sept. 27, 1777. Their caravan carried the Declaration of Independence and the Liberty Bell for safe-keeping. The Congress convened in the courthouse on Centre Square before retreating west, across the broad Susquehanna River, to York the next day. A scaled down reconstruction of the courthouse where they met to discuss our young nation's business stands today in Buchannon Park.
