Barney Ewell built an illustrious track and field career culminating in 1948 when he earned the title of Lancaster's lone Olympic gold medalist. Ewell's athletic achievements, humility, and support of local student-athletes left a legacy that continues to inspire his community over sixty years later. In 2019 the city voted unanimously to change the name of Lancaster Square to Ewell Plaza in his honor.
